The tragic death of a three-year-old boy, Freddie Hussey, who was crushed by a runaway trailer has led to a new road safety campaign.
Now, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has produced an online guide showing motorists how to check their trailer is safely secured before towing objects such as caravans, horse-boxes and boats.
‘Tow Safe for Freddie’
To make sure you are using a trailer safely you need to:
- make sure the brakes are working correctly
- check that the lights are undamaged and working correctly
- check that the coupling height is correct
- use a breakaway cable or secondary coupling
The guidance also includes important information on checking:
- the towball and connections
- wheels and tyres
- lights and indicators
- loads and weight limits
